Lesson 8 - Introduction to Interfacing in Sewing
As we wrap up our exciting journey in the Free Sewing & Pattern Drafting, we are diving into one final but essential topic—interfacing.
If you've ever wondered how structured garments like collars, waistbands, and lapels maintain their crisp shape, then you’re about to uncover one of fashion’s best-kept secrets!
Interfacing plays a crucial role in garment construction by adding stability, reinforcement, and durability to fabrics. Whether you’re working on tailored pieces, structured designs, or even everyday clothing, understanding how to use interfacing properly can take your sewing from amateur to professional.
In today’s lesson, we’ll explore the different types of interfacing, their uses, and the right way to apply them. Ready to elevate your sewing skills? Let’s get started!
What is Interfacing?
Interfacing is used to give structure to fabric. Without it, some designs would look flat, shapeless, or too soft to hold their form properly.
Although all interfacings provide support, different types, work for different areas of a garment.
Common Types of Interfacing
- Hairstay– Used in structured areas like tailored garments to also used in waist band.
- Gumstay – Common in waist bands & facings
- Collarstay – Used to stiffen collars
- Breast Pad – Adds shaping & support to bust areas
Most interfacings come with glue on one side that is activated by heat, allowing them to stick onto fabric when pressed with hot iron.
⚠ Important Tip: Place interfacing carefully with hot iron, to avoid ruining your fabric or design!
And this is all for today's class.
