We have come a long way in our Fashion training – teaching how to sew. This year makes it 7 years (Wawu!! Can you believe I just realized while writing this blog post) The way the Fashion School started was actually not part of the business plan; but we saw it as an opportunity and we then had to put it in the plan, as students were already waiting to resume. At that time, we put our best foot forward, in ensuring that we offered the best Fashion Training; that for us entailed offering a whole lot. Our curriculum was so jam packed. We wanted our students to be very well equipped, and have all the knowledge. Hmm, it seemed like we caused more harm than good, as our students were overwhelmed with knowledge (LOL). At hindsight, we are grateful for our growth, for all those who have learnt with us, especially those who ensured they tell everyone they meet that OOTI is the go-to place in the city of Kano, to learn how to sew – our offering as always, is very worth it. As an introvert, I find it easier to talk… or should I say communicate with persons who show interest in what I am saying… If I am talking to you, and you don’t realize when I stop talking, then you are not interested in what I have to say… Asides from being an introvert, the above way is one way identified by Dale Carnegie in his book “How to win friends and influence people”. How this does relates to the title of this blog post? As fashion designers, our team members must be made up of people who are genuinely interested in your point of view, because, you would be working with them to make your vision a reality. If they are not genuinely interested, actualizing your vision would be a lot of back and forth. Generally this is the case…that is the back and forth part, but it is greatly reduce by the   interest of your fashion team members. Gist time. So today, during office hours, my colleague asked me "Ma, must I test my block?" Okay, here is what transpired before this question came up. I allowed staff interested in learning pattern drafting, to join the evening class. And the first task was to make a block (template for a garment). The block is usually tested to ensure fit on the wearer. This lady had done her block, but maybe laziness, or i have tested a block before... or something else made her ask me the above question. I really did not know what to say to her. When the time for the evening class came, I spoke my mind to her.... and here it goes. You never really know, until you work it out... you can read all the books on pattern drafting, but until you try it out on paper, test for the fit in a sample fabric, you cant say you know....
