Fashion School Curriculum - Change

Image
Change is the only constant thing.  If you are doing anything that stops yielding the  expected result... change it. We have come a long way as a Fashion School in the city of Kano Nigeria, and this has come with various change. At every phase of our growth, we have ensured that we gave our best at that level. Our change over time as been born out of various change in requirement. Let me talk about this change.

Hopeful May

Image
What you feel, is a choice for you to make. At this times, we have chosen to be hopeful, ...  smiling through it all. Its a new month, and God is good. Its been a while since we last posted on the blog, but we sure can still talk about the ongoing events. Osas Olumese Training Institute, Kano has been closed since the lock down began here in Kano State, about two week ago, due to COVID-19. This means that we have not been engaging in any business activities.... we haven't been training students in the science and art of sewing and pattern drafting. Although we miss all the busy-ness at the office, we choose to see the silver lining.  It has been a time of going back to the drawing board to think out new, improved and better ways to serve our students better. If at all we downplayed online sewing and pattern drafting classes, as never before, this season has made obvious the need. Although we would still have physical classes after the lockdown,

Habits Determines your Results

A habit one forms, leads to character Anything worth doing at all is worth doing well My Mother I remember these words of my mother while growing up; even till this day she keeps saying it. While growing up, on hearing these words, I would feel like pulling out my hair, as most times the words are provoked by a poorly done chore. Mummy always loved work to be done to perfection, and she doesn't accept anything less. If she notices any imperfections, she will voice out those words of hers. These words framed my work habit, thus I ensured that whatever I did, I do it in the best possible way I know it can be done. I notice that persons who learn the skill of sewing in a haphazard manner, always find it difficult to change the narrative when they become experts. The truth is that you bring your personality and your work habit into anything you do, and learning a skill also. A conscious effort to put your best from the start... Ensuring that stitches are sewn perfectly

What a blog post title for the first post of the year... I thought about it too, but since I have an already  documented post, it can as well be the first for 2020. Happy New Year to you. Thank you for making 2019 count for us, Lets together make 2020 outstanding. New year 2020 Back to the crust of today's post Basically this post is about churning out well made clothes in short time frame. I had to force myself to think about this, as my work load grew. Although I can delegate things to get done, I am yet to grow past the feeling that I get it done it better. Don’t judge me, I will grow out of this. I must, to scale... my brand . Back to the point of this blog post… so when I need to get more done in a short period of time, what I do is... division of labour (thankful for that topic in economics). I do have apprentice that I may not be comfortable giving them the whole garment to do, but I trust their ironing skill, straight line sewing skill,

Vulnurable: Business Finance

Should I confess? Yay!!!(hands on my head) See my life in my very before, because I want others to learn (pardon my Nigerian English). #TrueConfession My Finance record is very messed up... This has been a struggle, since I started business... I just want to know where the money is coming from and where it is going to. I have used pen and paper, books, apps, excel sheet. I would start, and then begin asking myself, what the point was, as  I never had the time (or more like ..patience) to go through the expenses, to find out what we were spending money on, if the expenses made business sense, if we could reduce or eliminate the expense (typing this blog post, I just thought of a way we could task our office neighbours to contribute in reducing our water expenses)... things like that... The fact that I had not gotten it right yet, meant I would keep trying (right?) Fast forward to the end of August, I knew I needed to try out options I hadn't tried... I put on my t

Kano Corpers, Where are you?

Image
Allow me to first of all say "Happy New Month" - September is H E R E I served in Lagos, and I worked my posting there (smiling face). I had so much plans about how my service year should be, and I felt Lagos was the place I should be. I grew up in Kano state Nigeria, where I had my primary school education, and partly secondary education... part, I did in Kaduna. My tertiary education was in Ogun State (Covenant University). Why am I giving you my history? I am very conservative, and highly introverted, and looking at my history, working my NYSC posting to Lagos, would not cross one's mind. One of our very first corpers...  I did it! And for me, this was one of the best decisions I made. I made most of my decision (even money decisions) while serving, asking myself again and again why I decided to get posted to the state. This helped me make choices that favoured my serving in Lagos . I attended a lot of Fashion events, both free and paid. I attende

Vulnerable: My Scheduling Problem

For change to take place, there must be discomfort with the present state of things. The statement is so true, and determines whether or not one grows. There is need to keep challenging the norm, by asking ourselves "How can I do things better?" The need for stylish and perfectly fitting clothes by women; for ever growing events, cannot be denied. Women are constantly needing pieces that will make them stand out from the crowd in events. They want the memory of what they wore to still ring a bell, a long time after the event. This is a good thing for persons in business of making clothes, as you always want to have business. When people start appreciating the great job you do, work begins to grow to a point that you have more work than you can handle within a said time frame (as the demand keeps growing). If you don't find a way of keeping track of things, the ball starts to fall from your hands. Customers do not want to experience being disappointed, as a

Aims and Objective

I was surprised today when she brought me a micro-mini version of the cut out fabric of what she had been taught in class, asking how it should be sewn. On a second thought, I was excited about the fact that she would be adding her creativity to the work...So I thought. I asked her, she further surprised me by saying, it is actually a macro-mini version, and she would be using it as house clothe😟😞😕 ....house clothe, ke? you mean you would take your time to sew a house clothe? My thoughts were these: she plans not to take the class work serious she would not put effort to ensure a beautiful result, by ironing or evening using interfacing. When I inquired, she then goes on to explain how she is better than those who made their class deliverable for some other person. Then I realized her issue, as I remembered a student who once said they were being thought how to sew vintage clothes. Consideration has been put into the curriculum we have come up with. We have had t
