Learn How to Sew: My Journey - Part 1

Image
Gist time!!! My name is Osamudiame Olumese, and I am the Chief Facilitator at Osas Olumese Training Institute (OOTI); where I and other facilitators teach students on how to sew and pattern draft – women’s wear. Me!!! Facilitating at OOTI I started learning how to sew, when I was in secondary school (during school breaks). When I started business – sewing clothes for women - a lot of people heard about the business and the great work we do. A lot of people who came to us at the beginning, thought the business was led by a much bigger person, but you could see their uncertainty, when they saw this tiny lady (In my defense, I used to be fat – story for another day). Anyways, I started learning how to sew when I was quite young, and I have always been very interested in the process of garment manufacture… so I would always embrace the opportunity to learn something new from anyone, as regards sewing or fabric cutting… I would even go to the library (Kano State Library)!!! Yes, I d...

We are going through a Process of Change

We have come a long way in our Fashion training – teaching how to sew. This year makes it 7 years (Wawu!! Can you believe I just realized while writing this blog post) The way the Fashion School started was actually not part of the business plan; but we saw it as an opportunity and we then had to put it in the plan, as students were already waiting to resume. At that time, we put our best foot forward, in ensuring that we offered the best Fashion Training; that for us entailed offering a whole lot. Our curriculum was so jam packed. We wanted our students to be very well equipped, and have all the knowledge. Hmm, it seemed like we caused more harm than good, as our students were overwhelmed with knowledge (LOL). At hindsight, we are grateful for our growth, for all those who have learnt with us, especially those who ensured they tell everyone they meet that OOTI is the go-to place in the city of Kano, to learn how to sew – our offering as always, is very worth it. As we grew...

Knowledge Appreciation - Happy New Year

Happy New Year!!! 2021 is here!!!! It's been a bit. What have you been up to? What are your plans, for the year? As usual, I expect everyone to have plans for the year (as per new year #something.. LOL). At OOTI, we do have plans; this will unfold as the year progresses. I must confess that we have enjoying the holidays, as we closed on the 23rd of December 2020, and would be resuming on Monday the 11th of January 2021, classes would be resuming on Monday 18th of January 2021. Osamudiame Olumese If you have plans to attend a fashion school in the city of Kano, Nigeria; experiencing tailoring in a whole new light, we are your plug. We would take you through our tried and trued curriculum, where there is no assumption, or second guessing ones self. We follow pattern drafting instructions, and leverage on our experience in making made-to-measure garment for our large clientele. You would be surprised that in a record time, your understanding of garment production, (with emphasis on s...

Partnership Between OOTI nd SkillUp Week

Image
I have been away for a bit....but, how have you been? . . What have you been up to? So much has happened over time. Even though there's been routine work, but worthy of mention is "something different". OOTI partnered with Skill up Nigeria , for her 2nd edition of training, and it was a blast. The atmosphere was filled with so much learning, especially as the participants asked thoughtful questions, and contributed their own knowledge,  thus making the experience well rounded.  At the end of the training, we got beautiful feedbacks.  Although we wished it continued, the end came, and we were proud of the beautiful skirts and buba that were made by the participants. .. and they went a step further to embellish their garment. We can't help, but mention the presence of EDC, giving the whole experience an increase world class vibe. You get to experience this through the pictures taken...  Grateful to Aisha, who took out time to capture moments during the class. Far...

2020 is not yet over !!!

Image
It pains me when I hear people talk about 2021, without considering the remaining days of 2020. What about the next minute⏰, or even the next second. As I type this, I am excited about the remaining days of this year, and I feel like shaking everyone around me to get them excited too. As I have gown older, the words of David, in the Bible, seem to sink "better" into my consciousness So  teach  us to  number  our  days , that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. This is very important and cannot be over-emphasized. If you have already signed out of 2020, but you are only waiting for the dates to actually change, do rethink, and think hard. I am not spelling doom for 2021, but, you really haven't experienced the year yet. I am of the opinion that the year will take a better course, if you enter into it...running. Having said that, my question for you is  this... What have you done on that goal you set; 'to learn how to sew, and cut well, so you always have co...

I am challenging myself

Wawu!!! This would be my first post, this month 🙈 (face covered). Anyways, to the topic. I want to form the habit of writing. I got inspired to do this, after reading a Facebook post in this regard. So here goes my baby steps. Yesterday Saturday, I was having a conversation with one of our students. She revealed to me that we were the third fashion school she was attending 😲 (this is a wawu something.. LOL). The truth is that, for everyone who has this pressing quest for knowledge, we always have this feeling, that... " I have not known enough". This is so true, yet so few people are aware, and also, so few people pursue their quest for knowledge. Interestingly, I had a similar conversation, during the course of the week, with another student. Although we may never come to the point where we know all, we must come to a point where we are confident in what we know, in order to produce results from it. The fact we are confident doesn't mean we short down learning; but we ...
