How badly do you want it?

Gist time. So today, during office hours, my colleague asked me "Ma, must I test my block?" Okay, here is what transpired before this question came up. I allowed staff interested in learning pattern drafting, to join the evening class. And the first task was to make a block (template for a garment). The block is usually tested to ensure fit on the wearer. This lady had done her block, but maybe laziness, or i have tested a block before... or something else made her ask me the above question. I really did not know what to say to her. When the time for the evening class came, I spoke my mind to her.... and here it goes. You never really know, until you work it out... you can read all the books on pattern drafting, but until you try it out on paper, test for the fit in a sample fabric, you cant say you know.... I have been in this situation. Before I began actual pattern drafting, I had read through books. I enjoyed going through these books, and imagining the

My NYSC and Pattern Making Story

I worked my posting to Lagos. Yes, the very introverted Osamudiame worked her posting to Lagos. (It is not against the law). After graduating from University, reality smiled on me. It was a time of soul searching, and the question I posed to myself was: Do you want to practice Computer Engineering (My course of study)? Guess what? I couldn't answer this simple question. I had spent Five (5) years of my life studying and at the point where it should be my profession, I wasn't sure. I have always love the process of making a garment, and I thought why don't I make use of Service year for my first love, before fully deciding on what steps to take afterwards. In other to make the Service year really count for my first love, I knew that Lagos was the place to be, and so I worked my posting to Lagos. Service year for me was a mixture of emotions. I was posted to an IT firm (YAY!!! big money.... your right). I struggled through out my time there, so many thing did not

Structures and Systems: Garment Production

I have been thinking about Structures and Systems lately, especially as relates Human Resource. Would you blame me? We are presently a small business seeking to break loose from smallness and scale up. As I write this blog post, I just took a break in drafting an offer letter. this is a first for me, and thanks to google, I am learning new things. I saw this statement online, I think it is profound, and decided to write a blog post around it. "An employee's job is to give his or her best at work every day.  A manager's job is to give that employee a reason to come back to work tomorrow." Source: Forbes.com When I decided to start a business around Sewing, a lot of people who I met always complained about the unreliable nature of tailors. I started business, and started employing... but I did not experience this unreliable nature.... Maybe it was because we did not have a big customer base, or we could afford to hold on a customers clothe for long

Nigeria 2, Iceland 0

I listened to the Match between Nigeria and Iceland. This is a first for me, and I enjoyed every bit of it.  I cant remember ever watching a football match from beginning to end (don't judge me).  It was time for the match, and at that particular time, I was tired of listening to music on my memory card, and decided to switch over to a radio channel. Voila Wazobia FM Kano was prepping to start their commentary.  On hearing this Mercy (a team member at Osas Olumese) increased the volume. I was surprised she had interest in football, as I had on two different occasions exited football commentaries - I voiced out my surprise, as she commented... "it is Nigeria playing". I knew it was Nigeria playing but....Football is not my thing. Since I was bored listening to music, why not listen to the football commentary along sides other team members who I am sure were also interested. Team ... This has been in my mind for quite sometime, especially with regards to hav

What has Mathematics got to do with it: Converting from Inch to Centimeter and Vice-versa

Image
Hello... It has been on my mind to share with you some of the things we take our students through at OOTI, but the time to sit down and blog has to be planned, since I am not a full time blogger (for now). As we introduce our new students to the world of sewing and pattern making, we also introduce them to the basic mathematics of converting from centimeter to inch and vice versa. During the course of the week, as I taught new students on Calibration , I could read the expression on their faces ( Not again, I thought I was done with maths... LOL). The good news is that; it is more about the application of mathematics to what we do :) Now to the topic at hand: Why do we need to do this conversion in the first place? Generally, we at OOTI take measurement on the human body using inch, but we follow some pattern instructions ( Winifred Aldrich ) that  makes use of  centimeters, thus the need to know how to do the conversion. In between, if you must know, I think in inches. goo

Summer Fashion Course for Young Adult....Loading

Image
God is good, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity I had to learn how to sew at a young age, I was about 12 years. I remember wanting to work during secondary school holidays, but I dare not tell my Dad that, cos I knew he would not allow me. My fascination about how a garment is produced did not allow my introverted self to keep quiet about wanting to learn, this began my journey, and I am still loving it Today, I don't do a lot of sewing even though I enjoy it, but the knowledge I have continously acquired as relates garment production dictates a lot of things we do at Osas Olumese. And I am forever grateful for my early start. You too can have an early start with the Summer Fashion School for young adults that would span a period of 5 weeks starting on Monday, 8th August, 2016. More information  coming soon.

Dreams do become real... Do the work

Image
Courtesy - http://thejobwindow.com/blog/motivation-monday-lupita-nyongo/ Went to church today, and my Pastor spoke some deep truths about dreams, I could not hold myself, I decided to write and share some of what I got with you Dreams is your raw material for your future. I have a dream, I realise that for me to connect my now to the reality of my dreams, there is work I have to do. Some part of the work, I know to do, a large part I don't know. So, my strategy is to go where I would be equipped with knowledge, pictures that would give me direction towards the realisation of my dreams. The part I know, I daily work with, and I am also teaching those interested,  and who are willing to pay for it😊. For me learning every day has become my life style, it comes naturally because, I must get to the reality of my dream. I know how to make well fitting female clothing, this is what I do on a daily basis, alongside my team. Would you like to learn how we do this? Register

Learning Everyday

Image
By Osamudiame Olumese I wrote this in my journal a while back. I think I was just inspired at that moment about the words to motivate people to take up learning "how to sew" at Osas Olumese Training Institute. Ok, enough of my talk.... here's the write-up, enjoy and do not forget to comment. In learning a different way of getting something done, consciously, we would most times ask ourselves, why? Then, this is followed by; No, it is more complex. We must realize that the very way we currently do things did not come to us without a struggle both internally and externally. Our choice to hold on in spite of headaches (as a result of mind conflict), confusion (as a result of new process) made our new found knowledge become a way of life. You can relearn everyday, just decide to do it. #SomethingNew #SomethingDifferent #MakingUseOfMyMindProductively #HappySunday Osamudiame Olumese  is the founder of Osas Olumese, the brand that hous
