Kano based Fashion Designers: Let's Connect

Image
So much we can do together, .... if and when we collaborate. I have been thinking on a lot of things lately, as I have time on my hands as afforded by this COVID-19 lock-down. Me: Osamudiame As Fashion Designers here in Kano.... on our own, we can do ALOT, But together, we can do MUCH MORE. This is only possible, on the platform of Collaboration. Yes!!! you heard me right. We need to come together, speak with one voice, to amplify our collective work. How I wish there exists a platform that can act as a vehicle to achieve this (If wishes were horses, beggars would ride). So here is what I can do, and here is what I am already doing.... I AM THE CHANGE. Taking calculated steps that would cause a ripple effect, that translates into what we all want to see. I can not do this alone. So I have been in talks with other creatives, so that through our collective efforts, we can cast the spotlight on designers, starting from Kano Designers. It has really being exciting thus far. I thought I

Lessons from Kano Miracle Crusade (KMC)

Image
Kano Miracle Crusade (KMC) has grown to become a yearly event organised by Christ Embassy Church Kano, enriching the body of Christ. This year's was the fourth, Frank Edwards was live in Kano. I have been privileged to attend ...uhhmmm... 2.5 (LOL). Now to the gist. About two years back, a fellowship I belong to decided to start a pop corn business to raise money for her activities, thus reducing pressure on her members. This has been a beautiful idea. We got someone, whom we trained and he started working for us. Last year, we attended KMC as a business, and let me just say, we smiled at our income, so this year, we decided to be at KMC again. We had our plans, we shared duties amongst the Excos, we made money change in smaller denominators. Infact, everything was set for us to outdo our past KMC result. The day came finally on Friday 12th April 2019. All Excos were asked to be present at the venue at 8PM, as it was an all night event. I being an Exco got ther

When plans change

Image
Yesterday, I had planed to leave the office at 4 PM. The day before, I left the office, and headed straight for a vigil. The next morning, I had to attend the wedding of one of our students (I could not have missed this... ever.. it should not even be thought of). On the day of the wedding, I rushed into the office to ensure that I gave out instructions, that would ensure proper running before running out for the event... behold a customer walks in and requests for her cloth..... hmmm. That is how my plans for the day started changing. We made magic happen, I attended the wedding, and I got back home at about 9 PM. . . The main focus of this post is about our Saturday students, who started class sometime this year. As I was ensuring that I sent the cloth out on time, these two ladies were patiently doing their work. They seemed oblivious to the fact that it was way past their closing time. They kept working, even though I made them loosen wrongly done stitches,  they were

Personal Development and Impact Conference #PDIC2019

Image
Yay!!! So excited to tell you about this event happening in Kano, this March I would be speaking again!! This is my second speaking assignment in four (4) months. It is seems to be coming in short interval. Personal Development and Impact Conference Anyways, I would be speaking at Personal Development and Impact Conference #PDIC2019, on the topic ”Discover you”. I would be speaking alongside my brother Pastor Edward Olumese, his wife Pastor Ogechi Olumese, Pastor Godwin Ogwuche and Jennifer Agunloye of GiST . These names should sound familiar, if you live in Kano State Nigeria, and if you attend events. I would be sharing some discovery I made about me, which I have leveraged on in my entrepreneurial journey. You would be sure to learn a whole lot, and be fired up to be more. I am certain you would leave the conference with action points, drawing from what you would learn from all the speakers. Guess what? Registration is free! Decide to be a p

Share your ideas

Image
As an introvert, I find it easier to talk… or should I say communicate with persons who show interest in what I am saying… If I am talking to you, and you don’t realize when I stop talking, then you are not interested in what I have to say… Asides from being an introvert, the above way is one way identified by Dale Carnegie in his book “How to win friends and influence people”. How this does relates to the title of this blog post? As fashion designers, our team members must be made up of people who are genuinely interested in your point of view, because, you would be working with them to make your vision a reality. If they are not genuinely interested, actualizing your vision would be a lot of back and forth. Generally this is the case…that is the back and forth part, but it is greatly reduce by the   interest of your fashion team members. Their interest somehow gives the Fashion designer “freedom” to share his / her ideas. When this freedom is there, the creati

Testimonial: Chinwe

Image
Hello,  I am Miss Chinwe. I'm here to tell you about my experience in Osas Olumese Training Institute. Firstly, it is a fashion school where pattern drafting is used. Seriously, I enjoyed my learning here... though when I started, it wasn't really funny because I was not following nor understanding the pattern at all. I must confess, I wasn't really following during my skirt variation class. At a point I told myself that this is really a waste of time and resources but as we all know, nothing good comes easily. I continued coming. During the bodice class, I opened my mind and I conciously avoided distractions, and I enjoyed every moment of the class. I would say it's better to start early, especially if you have passion for it,  than to procrastinate. When I started this fashion school, the funds wasn't there but grace kept me going. At this point I would say there is nothing wrong with having a handiwork. Are you still thinking of a great pl

Strong Women: Women as the Biggest Challenge to Female Entrepreneur

Image
Some time in October, I was informed that I would be amongst the panelist in a conversation at a women's conference. In November I got the topic, but I struggled with it as I had my reservations about the topic. I talked to people to give me ideas, but still yet, nothing , so I decided to play with the thoughts coming to my mind using words, and I was able to draft out the framework I used. I must commend the organizers of the event... it was their first and it was.... wow!!! They have set a standard for women event in Kano .. no infact Northern Nigeria... the team spirit was something beautiful... Kudos Ladies If you would love to see pictures, follow @strongwomen4u on instagram

Have you ever sent out a clothe that you know was not completed to your taste? I cant remember ever asking anyone this question, but I do struggle with sending out clothes, as most times I feel there is still more to be done. Class in session

How I found out she Loved Red

Image
It was her Grandfather’s book launch, and the whole family would be wearing similar fabric. Her mother not wanting her then 6 months old daughter dressed otherwise, asked that I, her aunty make something for her…. my little niece. Even though I most times don’t enjoy making children’s clothing, I had to make an exception for Sophie. Sophie Olumese

We are giving out 100 garments

We are giving out 100 garments So excited about this! We have talked about doing this for some years now, thank God for being vocal about it, and being bold to always tweak the idea for making it work. I am so excited about the persons we have chosen to manage the project this time around.

Interning in a Fashion House

Image
It seems a lot of Polytechnics in northern Nigeria now offer Fashion Design as a Course. I think this is a new development, as I have received a lot of people wanting to intern at Osas Olumese. It seems to me that most of these prospective interns did not choose Fashion Design as their course of study, but were given the slot by the school. Based on this assumption, the first thing I ask a prospective intern… is if they are really passionate about Fashion Design.

Thinking out Loud: Work Schedule

A while back, I wrote about processes, and structure.... Though I am still learning, I am always excited about seeing my thoughts in black and white, so that when I have gotten a hold of it, I would be able to look back and appreciate where I am coming from. It is popular story that tailors disappoint. This is so sad, as no one starts business with a mind set to disappoint; every one wants to be that tailor whose Monday, is Monday;  but as business grows (even with few customers, sef), scheduling work just becomes something else. Many be it doesn't become something else, but laziness to the task of scheduling sets in.

Kano Corpers... get in here

Are you serving in Kano State, Nigeria? Are you a corper in Kano State, Nigeria? Are you doing your NYSC  in Kano State, Nigeria? Lol😊... asking the same question, using different word combination. Don't dull your self, you can make beautiful things happen for yourself in Kano, while serving? A new session specially designer with corpers in mind, starts on Monday, 15th October 2018. I just chatted with an ex-corper, who found out about our classes, and offering to corpers late last year, when he was about rounding up his service year. He was excited to take hold of our offer to corpers, and he also ensured he got some percentage discount, as he got two other corpers to register with us. The good news is that they all had a great time learning. And I was happy to have them with us, as they motivated other students by their creativity, and the speed at which they produced their deliverables. I must not forget to mention that this ex-corper was key in the photo shot w

FAQ: Can I really Learn to Sew and Pattern Draft in Two Months?

Image
Can I learn confidence in two(2) months? This should be the actual question asked. The truth is this, the principles of sewing and pattern drafting are simple, but they may not be properly communicated to the learner. As a result, the learner learns by self interpretation of what has been observed. Principles which have been communicated to a learner properly, needs  practice time to be mastered. But a of time long practice time does not necessarily mean mastery, as mastery time may be elongated by lack of confidence. I remember when I started pattern drafting, in following the instruction, I would read and re-read instructions, I would compute, and compute again to avoid mistakes, I would compare pattern instructions... not sure of which would work.... These I realized latter on, were time wasters... though  these actions made me more in touch with pattern drafting. I had to take the risk of being incorrect, making use of the pattern to cut the fabric (testing the patt
